Professor Provost studies data science and its alignment with business problems. 

Professor Provost's current main research interests are:

Prof. Provost won the 2009 INFORMS Design Science Award for his work on Social Network-based Marketing Systems. His research was the basis for Media6degrees, the social targeting firm named as one of the 100 most valuable startups in 2010.

Previously he received IBM Faculty Awards for outstanding research in data mining and machine learning, won best paper awards at the top data mining conference, won awards in the top data mining competition, and received a President's Award from what is now Verizon. 

Prof. Provost recently retired as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Machine LearningHe was elected as a founding board member of the International Machine Learning Society. He is a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Machine Learning Research (JMLR) and Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery.  In 2001, he co-chaired the program of the premier data mining conference (ACM SIGKDD ).

Recently he was an organizer of the 2009 & 2010 Workshops on Human Computation (HCOMP), the 2009 & 2010 Workshops on Information in Networks (WIN), and the 2010 Workshop on Social Media Analytics (SOMA).

Professor Provost advises small and large companies who are interested in extracting useful knowledge from their data.  He has served as an expert witness on cases involving data science.  He also advises the U.S. Government (National Science Foundation, NASA, DARPA, National Research Council, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy) on policy and investments in data mining research.

He has applied advanced technologies to a variety of business and government problems, including on-line advertising, targeted marketing, fraud detection, counterterrorism, network diagnosis, network monitoring, and customer contact management.
