Research Outline

My research tends to focus on different forms of interaction between upstream firms (producers) and downstream firms (retailers or distributors) and how these interactions affect the social desirability of market outcomes. Much of this work has a strong regulatory focus.

My work on auctions is motivated by various business-to-business procurement problems, most notably (with Estelle Cantillon) how to design competitive tendering processes when quality, as well as price, is an important feature distinguishing responses to a request for tender. I have also investigated how government interventions, such as subsidies and taxes, affect markets that operate using competitive tendering processes. Currently, I am working on an empirical investigation of collusion in auction markets.

My work on the structure of supply chains started with my dissertation work on the beer industry, which examined the effect of exclusive distribution agreements between brewers and distributors. I am continuing this broad research agenda in work with Alexander Ljungvist, where we investigate the structure of vertical relationships in the banking industry, and with Kate Ho and Catherine Thomas, where we are looking at how interaction between insurers and hospitals affects the wider organisation of health care.

The following keywords may help clarify the content of my research: Industrial Organisation, Antitrust Regulation, Cartels, Bidding Rings, Collusion, Vertical Market Structure, Procurement, Economics of Supply Chain Management, Exclusive Dealing, Vertical Integration, Contracting, Price Descrimination, Applied Econometrics, Non-Parametric Econometric Methods, Density Estimation, Auction Theory.
