~ Music For Your Ears ~
On this page, you'll find short biographies of some of my favorite singers as well as samples of their songs.
Faye Wong is to Asia what Madonna is to America. Her unique voice can be recognized across the continent. Born in Beijing, she first became famous in Hong Kong singing Cantonese. Her career then expanded across China, other Asian countries and finally beyond Asia. Playstation lovers who bought the RPG game Final Fantasy VII got to hear Faye in the game's theme song,"Eyes on Me." Faye has also won renown for her acting as well, starring in films such as ChungKing Express, in which she also sings a Chinese version of a Cranberries Song as the theme. Click on her album cover to hear the song, "A Love Letter to Myself" (給自己的情信).
Edison Chen Kwoon-Hei is apart of the record label EEG (Emperor Entertainment Group). Born and raised in Vancouver, he speaks fluent English and is competent in both Cantonese and Mandarin. Due to his western roots, he has become a unique figure in the Hong Kong pop scene. By incorporating rap and R&B into his music, he sets himself apart from traditional Canto-pop singers. In addition to singing, Edison is a big face in the Hong Kong movie scene. He has starred in movies such as Gen-Y Cops and Infernal Affairs and even made an appearance in the American movie, The Medallion, starring Jackie Chan. Yumiko Cheng Hei-Yi is new to the EEG family. Though originally part of a group called 3T, she has established herself as a solo artist. She continues to gain popularity with time. Click on either picture of their pictures to hear a melody of some of their most hits performed during an EEG charity concert back in December of 2002.
During the summer of 2001, South Korean moviegoers went crazy for the romantic comedy My Sassy Girl. By year's end, it had become the second-highest grossing film for 2001. In February of 2002, Dreamworks negotiated the U.S. remake rights for the film. The film also had a successful theatrical run in Hong Kong in early 2002, where it topped the box office charts for two weeks straight. With its easy yet unpredictable blend of comedy, romance, and fun characters, My Sassy Girl can easily be included among the best that Korean cinema has to offer. Click on the movie poster to hear the movie's theme song, "I Believe."
Twins is a popular girl group in Hong Kong, winning the hearts of teenagers through a mix of cuteness and adorable voices. Though they are not actually twins, Gillian Chung and Charlene Choi nonetheless share a striking resemblance. By way of their charm, teenagers across Hong Kong can't get enough of them. In 2003, they starred in the Hong Kong movie, The Twins Effect. Jackie Chan made a guest appearance in the film. Click their album cover to hear the song, "Kite and Wind" (風箏與風).
