Luís Cabral is a graduate of Stanford University (PhD, Economics, 1989).
He taught at Nova (Portugal), LBS, LSE, Berkeley, Yale, and is currently W. R. Berkley Term Professor of Economics at New York University's Stern School of Business. His research interests are centered on the study of firm and market dynamics (sunk costs, networks, learning curves, R&D, reputation). His textbook, Introduction to Industrial Organization, has been translated into seven languages and is widely used across the world.
Professor Cabral is Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research; served as General Editor of the Journal of Industrial Economics from 1999-2003; and is currently Co-Editor of the Journal of Economics and Management Strategy.
He is an advisor to the President of the European Commission and has consulted with various multinational firms and government organizations.
Professor Cabral's research has been covered on television (e.g., NBC), radio (e.g., BBC) and in the press (e.g., The Wall Street Journal), both in the U.S. and in Brazil, Chile, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.
Other than economics, Cabral's interests include painting (his art work has been exhibited
on both sides of the Atlantic) and saxophone playing (performed with the
