frequently asked questions
1. How can I become a member?
The Marketing Society does not require you to go through any application process to become a member. To become a member, simply email the Marketing Society at mktsoc@stern.nyu.edu with "Join" in the subject line. Also, you can just show up to one of our weekly meetings and sign our sign-in sheet, indicating that you are a new member.
2. What are the requirements of a member?
Basic membership requires you to come to at least 2 events or obtain 4 points from other club activities, but we do highly recommend that you come to as many MktSoc sponsored events as you can. These events can only serve to your benefit. They will help you to not only explore the marketing profession, but also help make contacts with key employers in the fields. After obtaining 15 member points, you will become a Gold Member and receive additional membership benefits.
3. What are the benefits of being a member?
As a member of The Marketing Society, you will regularly be informed of key events that The Marketing Society sponsors. Through these events, you get a unique opportunity to network with individuals from major marketing firms.
Other benefits include receiving our “Weekly Update” emails that will provide you with internship and job postings from a variety of Marketing/Advertising related firms in New York, other marketing-related opportunities, and industry updates to help you stay informed.
Apart from that, The Marketing Society serves as a great way for incoming students interested in any aspect of marketing to meet people with similar interests. Our regular social events give you a chance to meet these people and share your interests.
4. When are regular meetings?
The Marketing Society holds regular meetings every Wednesday at 12:30PM in LC-19. While this is our typical time and place, we do hold other events which may be at different times in different locations. Please check your emails regularly to stay informed.
5. What is a Gold Member?
A Gold Member is an active member who has attended enough professional and social events to earn 15 points or more (the requirement to become a Gold Member). Members receive their Gold Member status at the end of semester in which they have reached the 15 points mark. At the end of each semester we hold a Gold Member event during which members will be celebrated and receive a special event held in their honor.
6. What are the benefits of becoming a Gold Member?
Gold Members of the previous year get the opportunity to receive a free subscription to the American Marketing Association (normally a $50.00 fee). Subscriptions for the AMA are only once a year in Fall—during which time we will offer the Gold Members of the previous semester an opportunity to receive the free subscription.
Also, periodically, Gold Members will receive early notifications of important or noteworthy internship opportunities. Additionally, Gold Members will have priority in any other events we hold.
7. How do I earn points to become a Gold Member?
Points are earned by attending The Marketing Society's sponsored events. The following is a list of the types of events and points associated with each event:
- Professional Events (e.g. speakers, banquets, panels, etc) = 2 points
- Social Events (e.g. movie nights, etc) = 1 point
- Community Service = 1 point
- Fundraising Events (i.e. monthly bake sales, etc) = 1 point
8. I wanted to attend a particular professional event, but because of prior commitments I am unable to. Do I still get the points for that?
Unfortunately, you cannot get points for events you do not attend. However, we have numerous events scheduled during the semester at different days and times, so earning points should not be too difficult. (NOTE: This also applies if you forget to sign in at a particular event, so be sure to sign in at every event—if you can’t find the sign-in sheet at the event, ask us.)
9. What is the AMA?
The AMA, or the American Marketing Association, is a national organization dedicated to informing its member of current trends and changes in the industry. A member of the AMA will receive biweekly Marketing News magazine that will keep you updated on latest new and events. AMA members also get a unique chance to network with thousands of other marketers through AMA sponsored meetings, seminars, workshops, etc.
This is just a brief description of the AMA, to learn more visit the official AMA website:http://www.marketingpower.com/
10. How can I get more involved in The Marketing Society?
The Marketing Society is always brainstorming and implementing new ways to get our members involved. This semester, we've come up with a few great ideas that will be starting soon. In addition to new initiatives, at least once a year The Marketing Society holds a case study or competition during which we will create committees. Keep an eye out for more information and be sure to express interest! If you don't have too much time to commit but still want to be involved, the best way to do this is to come to our meetings and engage the professional speakers and other members. Finally, if you're interested in a leadership position, The Marketing Society begins the application process for the following year's E-board in the Spring semester.
11. What is the proper attire for Professional Event?
You are not required to wear suits or any “professional” looking attire—although you’re always welcome to wear them if you wish. You may, however, want to look decent and presentable for the speakers (remember you are representing The Marketing Society and Stern), especially if you plan on speaking with them after the event.
12. I no longer wish to be a part of Marketing Society, how do I get off the mailing list?
To get off our mailing list, send us an email at mktsoc@stern.nyu.edu with the heading: “REMOVE" + original email address in the subject line. We will immediately take you off the mailing list.
13. Where can I get a complete list of The Marketing Society events for the semester?
Go to “Events” section on our website—there you should see a list of tentative events for the semester. NOTE: these events are likely to change, so please check you email regularly to mark any changes.
