Abstract. Our goal is to establish quantitative, dynamic guidelines for the negotiation of make-to-order contracts along the dimensions of price, quantity and lead-time; this leads us to investigate the dynamic admission control of jobs with hard deadlines into the queue of a single machine operated under preemptive scheduling. We derive admission control policies using DP approximation techniques, and compare them through numerical simulations against the myopic and optimal anticipative policies. The future implementation of this work into a decision support system is currently under discussion with a major software vendor.
