TOP HEAVY: A Study of the Increasing Inequality of Wealth in America
By Edward N. Wolff, professor of economics, New York University
This report shows how the sharp increase in inequality since the late 1970s has made distribution of wealth in the United States more unequal than in what used to be thought of as the class-ridden societies of Europe. The only other period in American history when household wealth was so disproportionately held by a relative handful of the richest people was just before the Great Depression. And the situation today is worsening.
- OP-ED: Edward N. Wolff explains wealth inequality and suggests policy changes. (This piece appeared in the Washington Post)
- RELEASE: A press release issued when Top Heavy was published summarizes its main findings
- Wolff graphically demonstrates "HOW THE PIE IS SLICED" in an article written for The American Prospect.
- EXCERPTS: The FOREWORD and INTRODUCTION to Top Heavy.
