Ghent is a historic city, at some point the second-largest in the world, yet at the same time a contemporary one. The modern daily life plays itself out against a gorgeous historical backdrop. The Gentenaars are friendly, open-minded and somewhat headstrong. Above all, they enjoy life with great food and beer. 

Ghent has a lot to offer, from the gothic St Bavo cathedral with the famous altarpiece "Lam Gods" by the Flemish Primitives Van Eyck brothers (New Yorker article), boat rides on the canals, the historic downtown with het Gravesteen (the Castle of the Counts), de Graslei & Korenlei, de Korenmarkt, het Belfort (Belfrey), and beautiful churches, to a variety of museums. Ghent is close to many other beautiful cities in Belgium: Brussel (Brussels), Brugge (Bruges), Antwerpen (Antwerp) are all only half an hour away. Finally, your SED trip can easily be combined with a visit to neighboring countries: France, the Netherlands, Germany, and Luxembourg.
