Academia

I am currently a clinical assistant professor at NYU Stern and a fellow of the Center for Digital Innovation. Between 2010 and 2013, I served on the faculty of the University of Cambridge. I then joined NYU Stern in 2014 as a visiting research professor.

For most of my career, I have focused on topics related to digital technology.

Writing

In recent years, my work has shifted towards exploring innovative forms of civic participation. Back in 2014, I published Rebooting Democracy: A Citizen's Guide to Reinventing Politics.

I am now finishing a second, related book on political discourse.

Though not technically "writing", you might be interested in this series of short videos in which I address common questions about Extinction Rebellion's proposal for a citizens' assembly.

Activism

A few years back I co-founded an exciting project in Portugal: Fórum dos Cidadãos aims to bring the informed, reasoned voice of ordinary citizens to the public debate on important topics.

Additionally, I serve on the boards of directors of two organizations doing amazing work to promote citizen deliberation: Policy Jury Group (US) and Europe's People's Forum (EU).

I am also proud to have been among the founding members of the Democracy R&D network.

Software

You can find some of the code I have written over the years on this page.

Here is an old concept paper describing an alternative way to organize personal documents that inspired much of that code.

Tonic Tapes

For those of you who are interested in the live music scene here in NYC, you might enjoy this small tribute to the historic music club Tonic.
