Sources of Vendor Production Cost Advantages in IT Outsourcing

From the Vendor's Perspective: A Complementarities Theory View on the Value Proposition in IT Outsourcing

Summary

Papers with Jeanne Ross - To date, most research on IT outsourcing concludes that firms decide to outsource management of their IT applications because they believe that outside vendors possess production cost advantages when facing environmental and technological change. A case study of a successful IT application maintenance outsourcing contract was conducted and showed that the vendor were able to generate cost advantages by using their economies of scale and scope to develop a set of complementary core competencies in IT service delivery and using the structure of the contract to allow  the vendor to apply these competencies to a client's engagement.

New work with Shinkyu Yang, Hellen Kim, and Mingdi Xin - We aim to explore the role IT workforce factors play in the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery in outsourced vs. in sourced environments.  We are also collaborating with The Outsourcing Institute to analyze the evolution of success factors in outsourcing for different kinds of firms and service needs.
