Avert Your Eyes!

Last night I was watching a movie with my parents - it was a Korean film called 'Oldboy' and in addition to many other discomfort-inducing scenes, it featured a lengthy, boisterous, vocal sex scene. Now I'm sure most of you have experienced the discomfort of watching a sex scene with your parents. Me, I can't do it. I squirm. I focus on an object across the room. I can't look at the TV.

It's not just with my parents, either. Heck, I can't watch that with my friends...they might think I was a pervert or something. Can't watch it on a date, don't want to give him the wrong idea ;). In fact, I can't even watch a sex scene alone. I mean if it comes on, I don't run and hide, but I always get this creepy voyeur feeling.

Who really enjoys sex scenes anyway? They usually seem so unnecessary to the plot (although I admit, for some movies, including Oldboy, they are integral to the part). And they really trip things up for families with children watching a movie that would otherwise be appropriate for kids. (When I was a kid, I had to leave the room whenever a French kiss occured, and was forced to leave during sex scenes through my teens - and people wonder why I'm so sexually repressed now :p) So why are sex scenes standard fare in movies these days? I know that many people look forward to them, and use them to stimulate erotic thoughts and emotions - but really, isn't that what pornos are for? I mean if somebody's feeling lusty, what's a wiser rental choice: Debbie does Dallas or Mission Impossible 2? (i suppose the latter is slightly less embarassing to rent)

I think we should get rid of gratuitous sex scenes in movies. Leave that stuff to late night Cinemax. Let it be safe for families to watch a movie together without uncomfortable squirming or eye averting. Or at least, if you're going to show breasts, show us some naked men too. We're not all straight men and lesbians, Hollywood.

"I can't even watch a sex scene alone."

That's the news. The rest is not.

"Or at least, if you're going to show breasts, show us some naked men too. We're not all straight men and lesbians, Hollywood."

This is more realistic.
